Here's Looking At You Kid!

The wave of online social networking has brought to light a new type of idiocy, the person who doesn’t understand the difference between public and private behavior. If you post something on your blog, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn or Twitter page, your information is public which means that anyone, including your boss, can view it.

So if you’re griping about how you hate your work and can’t stand your boss, you might want to clean out your desk now because chances are your boss may be Googling you and reading that information while you’re tweeting your latest update about calling in sick because you just couldn’t stand to sit through another day on the job.

A recent example of this stupidity occurred when a couple of Domino’s Pizza guys decided it would be funny to post videos of themselves on YouTube doing disgusting things with the food. Not going into details here but it was enough to get them fired and face the potential for prosecution based on the assumption that if they did it as a lark for a video, what was to prevent them from doing those things on a regular basis?

Get a clue, people, if you think your comments online are private and meant only for your closest drinking buddies, think again. Big Brother isn’t your bro, it could be your parent, professor or employer watching your every move so watch what you say in "public."

    Excellent post.

It does not take long to root around in Facebook or MySpace to find some ignorant yahoo trashing his company or family.

It makes no sense to me, when you think about the fact that there are potential employers and and current employers alike out there.

I had an applicant come in about three years ago and I was asked to look at his app. Just for fun I went to his MySpace site, which he actually included on the resume, and saw a hate list of the things he hated about his last three bosses, as well as one of his hobbies being "F**king off at work when the boss is not looking."

I will not even go into detail about one of the other resumes that I got that had some words written in "TXT" form.

It is all about lack of Common Sense and laziness.

Not just moaning about a job or doing stupid stuff to food to get you prosecuted.
I often think about all these girls jumping around naked or in action with all kind of guys at sites as "I shot myself". People see this! Not just the unknown surfer on the other side of the planet, but also your baby brother, your grandmother, a potential employer. Isn't anyone emberrassed anymore?

    I’m glad I read this. I rarely reply to peoples comments…not because I don’t like them…but because I thought it was self-serving.
    Thank you

If someone decides to take an interest in you, I guess there are plenty of means to help them accomplish that mission...

dang, what a bunch of morons. I have actually had employers search me on facebook/ myspace before. They told me afterwards, but since I don't post stupid drunken pictures of myself or say stuff I shouldn't I still got the job. Pretty crazy how fast you can go from being a top prospect to a no-call-back person just from a couple of quick clicks.

    Good post, thanks for sharing.
